Django postmodernism essay

Post-modernism is A late 20th-century style and concept in the arts, architecture, and criticism, which represents a departure from modernism and is characterised by the self-conscious use of earlier styles and conventions, a mixing of different artistic styles and media, and a general distrust of theories. Django Unchained, orchestrated by Quentin Tarantino, could be classed as predominately falling into the film category of spaghetti western. A spaghetti western, also known as an ItalianWestern or Macaroni Western , is a broad sub-genre of Western films that emerged in the mid-1960s in the wake of Sergio Leone's film-making style and international box-office success. The film is also a form of blaxploitation which revolves around the exploitation of black people, especially with regard to stereotyped roles in films. Blaxploitation films are also commonly associated with being poorly acted with anti hero storylines.

Django Unchained, like many of Quentin Tarantino's alternative films is full of intertextual references. This can be applied in numerous ways such as playing homage to another piece. A primary example of Django Unchained paying homage to another film would be the scene in which Dr King Schultz and Django ride in on there horses in which the screen appears blurred. This could be sed to be a replication in which it pays homage to the 1968 film "Once Upon A Time In The West". Furthermore another intertextual reference in the film Django is notably found in the opening credits. The font used of the opening titles of Django unchained is directly taken from the original Sergio Corbucci Django film made in 1966. An alternative intertextual reference to paying Homage to a film could be sed to parody it to gain an essence of comedy value. During the film Dr King Schultz and Django visit a powerful plantation owner at his home being Big Daddy. The character mr Big Daddy and the scenes in which take place could be sed to emulate those of the 1967 film "in the heat of the night" where mr Tibbs visits the highly powerful plantation owner Endicaott.

The way slavery is presented throughout Django Unchained is not within the conventional manner of films solely based on slavery. Although Tarantinos post modern mashup has an ongoing theme of slavery it is arguably an untruthful account of the problematic racial periods they lived within. The scene within the film in which there are heavy references to the Klu Klux can is set out to almost be comical and could again be a exhibit of parody on the klans behalf. The music played amongst this episode is taken from "Birth of a nation" and is called "The ride of the valkyries" which could be sed to depict the scene.
